What's glowing in October

On the day of the Fall Equinox, I woke up ready to clean.

I vacuumed my bedroom. I moved all the furniture. I relocated a shelf. I took everything out of my closet, and chose a capsule wardrobe for fall—and put the off-season items I don't wear into a suitcase. I swapped the beige sheet set for the midnight blue one. I brushed my dog and cut her nails.

We're ready for Libra season.

As a Libra sun, I've found that surrounding myself with beauty is a form of raw energy. I need it like plants need sun and water to flourish.

But—and I don't know if this is a Libra thing—when my birthday is approaching I always feel like it's a time of judgment on my life and social connections. Some years I can throw a party, and other years I'm not sure my friendships are steady enough to show up.

Collectively, change is in the air, and—a lot is in the air.

Venus will be retrograde from Oct. 3 to Nov. 14, partly in a sign it owns, Libra. Both the Libra new moon and Aries full moon this month happen with Venus retrograde.

Conventional astrology will tell you don't get a haircut (or god forbid, get married!) during Venus retrograde, or make any major changes related to Venus' realm of love, beauty, money, or self-worth. The more elevated advice? Use this time to review the past and allow it to create more security in the present.

Many of us right now are embarking on new, revolutionary paths, and can't quite see where this all is going. This month's astrology is an opportunity to ground into what you love—who you were as a child, who you've always been, and how that informs who you want to be.

Upcoming stories

Here's a quick preview of the stories that will be landing in your inbox this month!

  • How to interpret your solar return chart: Your birthday chart, called the solar return, contains predictive clues into what sort of year you'll have. This year, I'm a Scorpio rising with my natal Saturn conjunct the rising! Some people shy away from Saturn, which is about hard work and discipline, but Saturn is also the wise elder. The way I interpret astrology, I get to use my own intentions to choose how I express the archetypes. In this post, I'll show you how to cast and read your own solar return chart. I find these fun to do for the year prior, to see how literally the planets actually played out.
  • Silo as an allegory for our own forgotten history: Any other Silo-obsessed fans? I read Wool, the book the Apple TV show is based on, at least a decade ago, and the writing on this show is incredible. It also mirrors many themes I hear from the spiritual conspiracy theorists I tune into. Is it an accidental or explicit disclosure? You decide.
  • I once worked at a coffee shop: In this personal essay, I recount my misadventures working at a poorly-managed local coffee shop in my early 20s.

Our next Community Call

When someone asks, how are you, do you answer honestly?

I'm not even sure it would be socially acceptable to do so! With a friend group of "recovering people pleasers," I am especially cognizant of oversharing and weighing onto others' emotional labor.

The thing is, those of us who are moving through it right now understand that experiencing levels of sadness and rage isn't "bad" or something that even requires sympathy—but it does require expression.

This is a group who can hold that nuance.

Honest expression creates internal safety. We meet on Google Meet and have time for everyone to share.

The next one will be in early November. Paid subscribers will get the invite a few weeks in advance!
